Experiment 22: Ariadne and the Minotaurs

Posted on

Ariadne is the central character of the myth of the minotaur, even if this heroic act on her part was poorly rewarded because Theseus unscrupulously abandoned her after leaving the labyrinth.

Here, Ariadne walks the labyrinth using her thread so as not to get lost to find Theseus. Delivered, Theseus leaves the labyrinth without waiting for Ariadne.

In this artwork available in https://www.fxhash.xyz/u/Artgorithm you can direct Ariadne or Theseus (when delivered) using the arrows. But the characters act independently if you do nothing.

The annoying music is very freely inspired by the opera Ariadne auf Naxos, by Richard Strauss.

Circles are a recurrent pattern of the artist. He uses it to study the relationship between the arrangement of colors and their visual perception.

I was curious to see the result of a generalization and a systematization of this painting. The script I designed use a few main parameters:

  • the number of large circles (3 or 4)
  • the angle of the axe
  • the thicknesses of the different circles of the composition.

100 draws are available in Fxhash.

I used 8 different colormaps, with one that was extracted from the photo of the painting, and other colormaps from specific photos, to check if these patterns can be used to transcribe any colored atmosphere. Here is 16 draws of the result:

Composition, 1941 is one of the many black and white works painted by Otto Freundlich.

The four 2017 occurrences generated by algorithm use the same balance between black, white and different grey levels of the artwork.
